The Gerlind Institute’s service to the community features following areas of expertise, among others:

  • We offer university-level teaching of conversational standard German language, literature, and cultural studies, individually tailored for rapid learning to your specific needs, as well as small group classes for adolescent and adult learners.

  • You study with enthusiastic teachers in a relaxed and focused atmosphere.

  • You can also expand your studies and enroll in compact seminars in German literature, philosophy, women’s and minority studies, genocide and Holocaust studies.

  • Every student can expect professional support in grammar and syntax in general and in specific areas, as individually needed.

  • We have an excellent track record in effective and efficient test preparation for student examinations, for example, translation exams and oral interviews in German, by an experienced tester.

  • We offer translation services from English to German and vice versa by professional, certified Foreign Language Correspondent who has eight years of experience translating in the fields of import/export, paralegal, health insurance, arts and media, as well as personal correspondence. For further information, please contact translation@gerlindinstitute.org.

  • We have experience with individual teleconference and long-distance learning classes.

  • We facilitate monthly German conversation groups, the Klönschnack and Runder Tisch, where we discuss wide-ranging topics of group members’ choice.

We assist with cross-cultural communication and language training for both personal pleasure and business travelers.

  • We are happy to support you in your genealogical research, for instance in researching family documents at the Bad Arolsen archive.

  • Per your request, we can organize sightseeing tours and/or research trips to Germany and accompany you as tourist guides, offering German immersion and interpretation services.

  • We are showing an extraordinary Germany-related film every other month (in German and other languages with English subtitles), followed by a discussion, keeping you posted on latest trends in German politics and culture.

  • In our oral history series, we invite women and men from our community to share their life's stories and dialogue with participants. Alternating months, usually the fourth Saturday, at 7:30 p.m.

  • We pride ourselves with bringing unforgettable speakers to the Bay Area, whose voices and stories have transformed lives and ways of thinking. See past Events.

  • We offer occasional German wine tasting seminars with wine experts (in English). See Events.

  • We network and provide referrals and resources. Feel free to contact us anytime at info@gerlindinstitute.org.

We look forward to assisting you.
