    Language classes

    Our Fall Semester runs between September and December, beginning September 1, and ending December 17, 2010; however, class sizes are flexible and students may join during the semester, if feasible. See our calendar for the current month.

    All our language courses are based on a communicative approach, embedding speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension in cultural contexts. We tailor our classes for fast learning to students’ specific needs.

    Deutsch für AnfängerInnen

    Willkommen! You’re very welcome to enroll in this course without any previous knowledge of German. Focusing on conversational standard German, you will quickly develop basic speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills and study elementary grammar and vocabulary. Using authentic German language texts from a variety of media (print, digital, audio, and video), you will become familiar with German and im/migrant cultures and the geography of German-speaking countries. You will learn to communicate in German about everyday topics, including greetings, your life, family and friends, hobbies, housing, daily routine, time, holidays, food, shopping, and dining.

    Teaching material (editions) will be discussed in our introductory class.

    Advanced Beginners German

    Alles klar? In this course you will continue your German studies at an advanced beginning level. We’ll focus on further developing your conversational German skills, broadening your speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension, and studying basic grammar and vocabulary. You will become more familiar with German and im/migrant cultures in German-speaking countries through authentic German language texts from a variety of media (print, digital, audio, and video). You will learn to communicate in German about everyday topics in the past and future, including sports and other leisure activities, health and fitness, traveling, media and technology, personal wishes, and public opinion.

    Intermediate German
    Mondays/Wednesdays (every two weeks), 7:30-8:30 p.m., Oakland

    Es ist alles so schön bunt hier! Building on your previous German studies, we’ll discuss a variety of everyday topics, deepen an understanding of German-speaking cultures and our complex global histories, review grammar, and expand your Wortschatz. By the end of this course, you will be able to communicate about topics of general interest orally and in writing, gain greater competence in German grammar, and enhance your knowledge of historical and cultural German issues. We will read and interpret authentic German language texts of various genres from a variety of media (print, digital, audio, and video).

    Topics in this course include, but are not limited to, leisure time, work life, media, Germany history of the 20th and 21st centuries, family, music, stereotypes, multicultural and environmental issues. The textbook will provide structure for your studies and exercises for grammar review. We currently focus on solidifying German grammar.

    Textbook: Moeller et. al. Kaleidoskop (6th or 7th edition). Houghton Mifflin.

    Konversation und kreative Schreibgruppe für Fortgeschrittene
    Freitags, 17.30-19.00 Uhr, Berkeley
    alle 2 Wochen, je 1,5 Stunden

    Wir setzen unsere Gespräche vom Frühlingssemester fort.

    Im letzten Semester diskutierten wir anhand von online Artikeln aus der ZEIT, taz und anderen Medien unter anderem über Immigration, Staatsangehörigkeiten, Integration versus Assimilation, Diversität, deutsche und US amerikanische Bildungssysteme, kulturelle Stereotype, Kulturunterschiede, Soziolinguistik und unsere persönlichen Leben. In diesem Semester integrieren wir auch weiterhin das kreative Schreiben und Schaffen der TeilnehmerInnen.

    Themen und Hausaufgaben nach gemeinsamer Vereinbarung.
